Communion Prayers for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost B 2009

Based upon John 6:24-35

The Loaf

Gracious Lord, this loaf which represents the body of your only son Jesus Christ broken on the cross, reminds us of the words he spoke to the multitudes.  “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”  This gift is most precious to us and we cherish it.  It feeds us with the true food.

Amen

The Wine

Again, Lord, we come here remembering, but not fully comprehending, the suffering your Son experienced on the cross.  It is an  anguish we can only grasp with our limited imagination,  but it is the same blood spilled that flowed though His veins on Resurrection Day.  That life giving blood now comes to us at this Supper.  May it resurrect us to a new spirit of love and grace.

 Amen
