Looking Forward to the City of God
Lord of Justice, Peace and Love, we hunger for the city you have promised.
We look at a world of war and suffering. In horror, we watch our media as we see one after another die or suffer torture and deprivation as a result of the harsh damaging realities of social strife.
You have taught us there is a life where those elements, of greed and hate which are so destructive, do not exist. You have given us glimpses of hope where we in our imperfection can find our way to an existence where the awful death and illness does not exist.
You have taught us we can have that better life – even in this life.
You have taught us that if we are brave and stand for the good, you will come to us and lift us out of this quagmire of suffering.
Yesterday, we in the U.S. celebrated our Independence Day. We remember the hope and promise our forefathers offered as they broke the shackles of oppression. After all the years since that time, we still long for your promised peace, justice, and love. We still hang onto the dream that this peace might be possible on earth. Toward this noble end, we strive with great sacrifice.
Assist us, God, in our endeavor to bring your City to earth.
Help us to find your City and be welcomed.
It is for this peace, justice and love we pray. Amen
