Call to Worship & Invocation for Pentecost 16B 2009

Based upon James 3:13 – 4:8

Leader:  As we worship today, let us be of right mind.
People:  We need to clear our minds of worldly things, and focus on Godly things.
Leader:  Focus on what is good and worthwhile.
People:  We need to think of the beauty of God’s creation.
Leader:  God does not want us to turn our minds from the pain, hunger and injustice in the world.
People:  We need to focus on God’s blessings, and how those blessings can help free the world of pain, hunger and injustice.
Leader:  Help us to focus on the Godly things as we pray together…
Unison:  Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways!
Reclothe us in our rightful mind;
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earth-quake wind and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.* [hymnbook p. 422, vs. 1 & 5]
* John Greenleaf Whittier, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

We pray these things as Jesus taught us to pray.  Our Father…
